When we were asked to review HP Spectre Folio 13, the 13-ak0950nd to be more precise, I really had to think about it. Not just because I am not the biggest fan of leather, but my own laptop was about to stop working. I was not sure if I really wanted to fall in love with a machine of 2500 euros. However, I am too curious not to at least try, so I did review the HP Spectre Folio 13, and this is what I think.
It surely is something, that Spectre. It arrived in a black box and especially since Spectre is such a James Bond-like name, you immediatly feel like you are on a mission. I was, obviously, as I had to decide if this is a laptop to recommend to other TechGirls. When the box was opened, I saw that I was going to use the box a lot: Spectre Folio 13 is a very thin laptop, and I am a person that easily puts her laptop on the edge of table. Let’s put it back in the box everytime I used it.
A luxurious look
The laptop looks very high class thanks to its leather cover. It even seems like you are just carrying around a notepad. I can imagine if you are a solicitor, it would really impress your c lients. That is why I put on glasses and my nice coat, just to look the part, what do you think?
Leather makes it look very nice, but I am not sure if I really dig the look. It is brown, which is not the most attractive color, and the leather is not smooth so I feel like I rub dirt in it every time I use it.
I think the part where your hands rest will have some wear and tear pretty swiftly. My own laptop has these marks and that is made of something polycarbon. A natural thing like leather will show signs of usage even quicker. And it might be very personal, but I am not a huge fan of using leather in anything. It is simply not necessary, this laptop will work fine just without the skin.
A sleek exterior
However, it is a sexy laptop, mainly because of its sleek, thin exterior. The screen is very thin and the same goes for the keyboard. That makes it a machine to use carefully: everything is designed perfectly, but it is not really made for crazy button pushing like I do on my own laptop. The mouse part is also a bit skinnier, which made me place my fingers in the wrong spot sometimes, but that is simply a matter of getting used to.
The size of the secreen is perfect (13,3 inch) and offers 4K-support, which makes it a laptop to watch movies on in great detail. There is a bad side too though: the screen is so shiny, your fingerprints will be all over it. And it will reflect everything. Just sitting in the sun outside writing an article? Forget about it. However, the colors are really vivid when you use it inside without any sun involved. It is very nice to see anything colorful on Netflix. It really comes alive.
I am very charmed by this laptop because of its really long battery duration. I am a person that always carries around her laptop and I always expect great things from the battery. HP Spectre does not disappoint. It promises a battery duration of 18 hours. And the battery is full in a heartbeat. Or, in three hours. I actually fell in love with the cable, as it is woven, so pretty. It is grey and thanks to its fabric, will not tangle as quickly as a normal cable would.
This laptop is very multifunctional. As a salesagent you can easily use it to show something in tablet mode. If you want to make an invoice, you simply change the mode. It is easy to shift the screen, as the leather folds very easily.
A strange fold
There is something odd about the leather folding though. In the middle of the back of the screen, there is this fold, especially made by HP, but the part underneath does not have it, even though that folds mostly when you use the laptop as a laptop. That means there is an ugly ‘natural’ fold in the leather, which seems unnecessary.
The sound is a bit shrill
Watching Netflix on this machine showed me how the sound of it is a bit shrill. Especially as it is so thin, there is not much room for the sound to really expand. That is a pity, as this laptop with its great screen quality and size is perfect for watching anything. Plus, that thin screen also means that there are only USB-C-ports in this machine, meaning you will need a lot of extra cables for the normal stuff like charging a powerbank.
This machine works great thanks to Windows 10 Home 64. It is easy to switch tasks thanks to its 16 GB RAM. There is also a stylus in case you are very creative and want to draw on the screen. So yeah, you can pretty much do anything with this laptop.
To answer the question if I fell in love with this laptop, I will have to say no. That is not because it is not a great machine, cause it is, it is because I am a bit of a viking and that means the sleek laptop does not really fit how I use my things. Plus, the leather is a bit of a dealbreaker for me. However, it is an excellent laptop for business use, as you can work on it, but in the evening you can use it to watch a bit of Flix for an hour. It will cost you 2499 euros though, so maybe just ask your boss to get one for you. 😉
